Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Brings the African Savanna to Orlando
A few years ago, on one of our Disney vacations, we were lucky enough to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. What a unique experience!
The main attraction at this Disney resort is not the hotel itself but the three wide open savannas that it surrounds. This land is home to a variety of free roaming animals - including giraffe, zebra, ostrich, many bird species and more.
Imagine waking up every morning and stepping out on your balcony to be greeted by this peaceful and natural setting. Our children, who were young at the time, adored the animals.
The lodge itself is an African themed hotel that brings an exotic flavor to central Florida. It is located very close to the Animal Kingdom theme park.
The guest rooms are a bit on the smallish side at 344 square feet. Our family of five (one in a crib) was a bit cramped. We also found the rooms to be a bit dark. On the plus side, almost every room has a full balcony and most, but not all, overlook one of the three savannas.
Not to worry about missing the animals, though. This Animal Kingdom resort is laced with paths to view the plains. For recreation, there is also a beautiful zero entry pool and playgrounds for the kids.
Dining is also convenient here. There are three main restaurants - Jiko provides fine dining options, Boma is super for family dining, and Mara provides quick service and extended hours.
Recently Disney began converting many of the rooms at the Animal Kingdom Lodge into suites for the Disney Vacation Club (DVC). I expect that these suites have more space than the standard guest room and are available when not reserved by Vacation Club members.
